Why TDA Was Formed

“What do the doulas need? What is a doula? How can we help support doulas? What would a doula bill include?’ The many questions echoed throughout the room. Then the chaos of a million different responses followed.

TDA founding members and a lot of doulas in attendance quickly realized there were a lot of well-meaning people wanting to do great work for doulas. However, they were left with confusing ideas from a small group of doulas, google, and no structure to gauge good answers.

There were two things everyone agreed upon:

One, left to their own devices and limited knowledge organizations and businesses would make their own facts about doulas.

There would be gaps and limitations put in place that would hurt doulas more than help.

There would be families who no longer had access to their chosen doula. Doulas wouldn’t be able to make an impact in their communities and help change the maternal and infant mortality rates.

Two, we needed to unite with the rest of Texas doulas and fast.

Unified we stood a greater chance of making sure doulas were well represented, listened to, and that no one person made the loudest noise.

In the first three months of creation, the Texas Doula Association has written and produced a legislation bill for doulas, hosted a people’s hearing at the capital, lobbied, and made many connections with legislators and other organizations.

Now we are looking for doulas across the state to bring their unique voices and help us continue to advocate for doulas, bring more awareness about doulas, and represent the doulas often overlooked.

Doulas should feel safe, and secure and have someone to advocate for them while they focus on helping families, Texas Doula Association will work to ensure that.
